What to Expect During Your Pet’s Surgery
Before the Operation
Every pet undergoing a surgical procedure at Carlisle Vet Clinic receives a comprehensive blood panel to ensure safe anesthesia and surgery. We ask that you don’t feed your pet starting at 8:00 p.m. the night before an operation, but please allow them access to water until you bring them to the clinic.
The Day of the Operation
Please drop your pet off between 7:30 and 8 a.m. the day your pet is scheduled for surgery. We will have a surgical form for you to complete, or one will be sent beforehand to save time at drop-off. Most pets may be picked up between 4:00 and 5:30 p.m.. When you pick up your pet, our staff members will go over post operative instructions to ensure a quick recovery.
During the Operation
We monitor pets’ vital signs during their operation to be sure they are responding correctly. In our older pets, we take extra precautions to be sure the anesthesia doesn’t negatively affect their organs.
While the pet is asleep during surgery, this could be the best time to take care of other procedures like dental procedures, nail trims or microchip implants. We can provide price ranges before the surgery for adding these services.
After the Operation
We use dissolvable stitches when possible. These stitches will disappear and won’t have to be removed. Sometimes, however, we do need to use non-dissolvable stitches or staples that will remain for 7-10 days after the surgery. We will prescribe medications to give after surgery according to each patient’s needs. We ask that you keep your pet’s activity level low as they recover and that you refrain from bathing them for 7 days after the surgery.
